Rs in “strawberry” -- AI error?

Some time ago I read this article where Kit Eaton comments that ChatGPT cannot answer correctly a simple question:

“How many Rs are in ‘strawberry’?”

In the article he goes to lengths to explain that “Somewhere in that stuff is enough info that an AI like ChatGPT can define what a word means. It can count. It knows what R is. It can even tell you what a strawberry is.”and that “it can’t understand the ‘stuff,’ or perform the subtle inferences and synthesis human brains can”.

However, today something came up and it reminded me of that article and I decided to test it.

It turns out that ChatGPT does know how many Rs are in “strawberry.”
