Vibe Coding Is Learning — With the Guardrails Removed


There’s a new moral panic circulating through developer circles, especially on LinkedIn and conference stages: “vibe coding.” The term is usually delivered with a mix of disdain and anxiety, meant to describe people who let AI generate large portions of their code while they vaguely supervise the process.

The accusation is familiar. These people, we’re told, aren’t real programmers. They don’t understand what they’re building. They can’t reason about performance, security, or correctness. They’re shipping systems they couldn’t debug under pressure.

Here’s the part that makes many seasoned developers uncomfortable:

What has changed is not the learning pattern itself, but the speed, the scale, and the disappearance of friction that once acted as an implicit safety net.

We didn’t start with understanding — we started with motion

There’s a comforting myth that experienced developers like to tell about their own origins. In that story, fundamentals came first. Understanding preceded construction. Every abstraction was earned through pain and study.

Reality was messier.

Most developers learned by building things they did not fully understand, copying code whose implications were unclear, and fixing problems only after those problems manifested in very tangible ways. Stack Overflow wasn’t just a helpful reference; it was a primary teacher. Blogs, snippets, half-explained answers, and cargo-cult patterns formed the backbone of early professional growth.

Understanding didn’t come first. It arrived later, usually dragged in by failure.

That wasn’t a flaw in the process. It was the process.

AI didn’t invent vibe coding — it removed the brakes

Vibe coding is often treated as a radical departure, but it’s better understood as an acceleration. The direction is the same; the distance traveled before consequences appear is not.

Before AI-assisted tools, beginners were slowed down by friction. Syntax errors, inscrutable compiler messages, incomplete documentation, and fragile tooling forced pauses. Those pauses created moments where learning could catch up with ambition.

AI smooths those pauses away.

Today, someone can assemble an application with authentication, persistence, APIs, and deployment long before they understand what any of those components truly imply. The code looks coherent. The tests pass. The system appears legitimate.

The learning pattern is unchanged: build first, understand later, learn through breakage.

What’s changed is how far someone can get before something breaks loudly enough to demand attention.

When mistakes stop being local

This is where legitimate concern enters the picture.

When earlier generations learned badly, their mistakes were usually contained. A broken side project. A misconfigured server nobody depended on. An embarrassing demo failure.

That containment no longer exists by default.

A vibe-coded project can reach real users, handle sensitive data, and integrate with external systems almost immediately. Failures that once taught quietly now fail publicly, and sometimes catastrophically. Data leaks, authorization flaws, and systemic fragility aren’t abstract risks — they’re predictable outcomes when comprehension lags too far behind capability.

This isn’t a condemnation of beginners. It’s an indictment of an ecosystem that removed friction without replacing it with structure.

The backlash isn’t really about quality

Much of the hostility toward vibe coding isn’t about software quality at all. It’s cultural.

The industry has always wrapped legitimacy in suffering. If you didn’t fight memory management, you didn’t earn abstraction. If you didn’t internalize syntax tables, you don’t deserve frameworks. Each generation mythologizes the pain it survived and treats that pain as proof of merit.

But programming has always evolved by raising the level of abstraction. Garbage collection didn’t invalidate programmers. High-level languages didn’t cheapen expertise. Frameworks didn’t end engineering, no matter how loudly some insisted they would.

AI is simply the next layer.

The relevant question is no longer whether people are using it. That ship sailed the moment it worked well enough to be useful.

The real question is whether users are being taught to see past it.

The divide that actually matters

The meaningful distinction isn’t between vibe coders and so-called real programmers.

It’s between people who treat generated code as a temporary scaffold and those who treat it as an oracle.

Some builders will inevitably demand understanding. They will ask why something works, what assumptions it makes, and where it will fail. Others will stop at surface success, mistaking functionality for correctness and stability.

AI makes it possible to remain in that second category indefinitely. Nothing forces a reckoning anymore. Systems can appear healthy until they suddenly aren’t.

In the past, pain performed that forcing function. Today, we have to design it intentionally.

Education is lagging behind reality

What’s striking is how quickly tools adapted compared to institutions.

Programming education, onboarding practices, and professional mentorship still assume that syntax mastery precedes system understanding. They operate as if construction follows comprehension, when modern tooling has inverted that order entirely.

Instead of adapting, the industry often responds with scolding. Beginners are told they’re doing it wrong without being shown how to do it better in this new environment.

That response doesn’t raise standards. It just ensures that learning happens invisibly and mistakes surface explosively.

Guardrails, not nostalgia

The answer isn’t to ban AI, shame its users, or resurrect older rites of passage out of nostalgia. Those rites didn’t guarantee competence — they merely distributed suffering.

What’s needed are deliberate guardrails: explicit teaching of failure modes, threat modeling as a first-class concept, and a cultural expectation that generated code is a starting point, not a verdict.

Friction shouldn’t disappear. It should be placed where it teaches rather than where it merely obstructs.

What vibe coding really signals

Vibe coding isn’t the death of programming. It’s the end of a particular initiation ritual.

That loss feels destabilizing, especially to those who endured it. But what matters isn’t how someone begins building — it’s whether they’re guided toward understanding before scale and consequence collide.

Vibe coding is learning.

Learning without guardrails, however, doesn’t produce engineers.

It produces operators who don’t yet know the systems they’re operating — and an industry that pretends this outcome is a personal failing rather than a structural one.
